The Airing of Grievances

The holidays can be a deeply stressful time for nonprofit leaders - especially those in the fundraising space.

  • The pressure to hit year-end goals.

  • The expectation (or wish) for an unexpected gift walking in the door before December 31.

  • The added pressure to be present for our friends, family, and selves for holiday celebrations

  • The creeping realization that, for many organizations, the fundraising engine starts up again on January 2

And while your social media feed might be absolutely filled with year end advice ranging from the helpful (when in doubt, thank you donors) to the performative (my year-end email message got a 200% response rate - comment "RUDOPLH" below to get my 10 point plan) ... I thought I'd go another way.

So, in the spirt of Festivus (for the rest of us), here is my airing of grievances for the nonprofit sector. If you are on this list, consider this a challenge to get your stuff together for 2025. And if you'd like help in that regard, drop me a line ...

Anyway ....

  • Nonprofits that laid staff members off the week before Christmas. Real Grinch energy. Do better.

  • Nonprofit leaders who front-load donor appeals with organizational issues (our goals, our budget gap, our strategic plan). It's not all about you.

  • Fundraising job descriptions that also include event planning, direct marketing, social media support, newsletter creation, light housekeeping duties, and donor outreach. Focus on donor outreach.

  • Nonprofit boards that don't have term limits, a recruitment strategy, or a shared vision. Are you doing all you can for and with the community you serve?

The good news, of course, is that we can all do better. Your organization can invest in the coaching, training, and strategic support needed to build confidence and clarity in your fundraising. You can build a community around your cause - and joyfully invite supporters to join you.

I've got some time before the feats of strength - let's talk and find out how we can make 2025 a remarkable year for your team and your mission.
