Stories we tell when things are grim

Writer's picture: Chris B.Chris B.

The stories that we tell ourselves - and the stories we revisit when things are grim - can tell us a lot about the values, ideals, and characteristics that are important to us.

In the nonprofit space, the past few days have been (and likely will continue to be) chaotic and scary. There's no shortage of shocking headlines, worried think pieces, and a feeling like we've just started down a very dark and treacherous road.

And while I appreciate the irony of creating social media content to tell views to take a break from social media, I also wanted to talk a bit about the stories that I return to when things seem scary.

And while I started this week feeling like Theoden .... "What can man do against such reckless hate?" I

hope to bring more Samwise into my life: "But in the end, it's only a passing thing this shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines, it'll shine out the clearer. I know now folks in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding on to something. That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for.”
